I think/suspect what you can do using a free hosted board is probably fairly limited in terms of what forum software can do. Incidentally at risk of thread hi-jacking I'll soon be switching St Neots Town F.C.'s forum software from Ikonboard to IkonForums www.ikonforums.com. Im preety sure that this software is perfect for what UCL Chatter needs. What can you do with that software that you cant do with ProBoards ??

*Tries to recall - I really should know off hand* Not having used Proboards I can't be sure what you can't do so I'll try and list a few things you can do with Ikonforums. Forums: can be password protected Forums: can control which member groups can read/start new topics/reply in specific forums Forums: option per forum to allow 'if code', html Forums: can make posts (depending on user group settings) force people to go via a moderator queue. Subcategories: unfortunately no sub-forums like here but it's similar Registration: Human readable image (if supported by server) to make it harder for spam bots from signing up. Viewing: Option to ignore posts by user, option to rate member Reporting: Option for users to report posts to a moderator, and option for mods to warn members. Though somewhat out of date this probably explains www.ikonforums.com/index.php?id=features

I have been thinking of a software upgrade but don't want to lose the content we have here. Of course the main benefit of proboards is that the forum is hosted and ad intrusion is minimal.

Sorry to bring a thread from the dead, but didnt really want to start a new one as this seemed the appropriate thread Have you thought about using a different forum software rather than the free proboards. My site uses vBulletin, whereas it does cost, it is by far the best purchase i have ever made. Although free forum software is available, phpBB, SMF and Ikonboard, i personally detest them, hence why i bought the vBulletin license I realise there is no easy way to get all the posts from here into a new piece of software, but what about, leaving this here as an archive, and starting a fresh on a new site and having a link back to here. Domains and hosting are very cheap, heck id even host the site free of charge for you, as i have a more than capable server of my own Take a look at www.peterboroughsportstalk.co.uk and you will see what i have done with it, and to see how easily things can be modified to suit your needs. I even have a news feed from the local rag automatically posting any news events etc Just a suggestion, you can tell me to f**k off if you like, but just thought id put the idea out there

ProBoards is clean and simple and does what we need for now. I'm not worried about the hosting as I could do that now but its losing all the posts and introducing people to a new software could take them a while 2 get the hang of.

just thought I'd put my 2 penneth out there. Me, personally, I just prefer having complete control over my board and not relying on someone else for backups etc.

and just another note. Are the ads on here benefitting you or proboards? Are you making financial gain from them or are proboards getting it?

We do get alot of control over the board, and ProBoards are a large company with over 100 different servers and 5 employed staff, so there not likely to stop the business all of a sudden. And ProBoards get money from the ads, but If I decided to host a board, Id use my own adverts.

I never said that they're likely just to stop. All I said was that I like to have total control over my board. Which you don't really get with proboards. Anyway I'm not trying to tell you how to do things here, far from it. Just trying to make a suggestion. Anyway i've said my piece, I'll leave you to it. Keep up the good work.

This forum is warm and cuddly! I suppose there are some fancier looking ones out there with php3 and the like, but I suppose we are now know as the UCL forum and have an existing proboards address. I wonder if people would migrate if there were to be a move?

I have only recently become a member, but like me if one is really interested in grassroots football they will join. making it compulsory before you can post responses will not promote the cause.

Who gives a sh*t about the technology? It's the content that matters.

But the content was consistently compromised by bad posts made by people who hadn't registered and had no accountability.
I can't speak for the site owners now (as I have no official interest), but I am sure the risk of losing people who don't want to become members is less than losing regular posters who are p****d off by idiots posting as a guest.
