F.A. Cup
First Round Qualifying
Huntingdon Town 1 Daventry Town 3
Saturday, 17 September 2011
Attendance: 161
Huntingdon Town Football Club bowed out of the FA Cup after being beaten by much fancied Daventry Town but they fought hard against opposition from two levels higher.
Manager Ricky Marheineke fielded an attacking team and named only two recognised defenders in Josh Crick and Charlie Bowen. Wingers Dan Moyes and Declan Rogers made up the back four and from the off it was apparent that the tactic was to press the visitors.
With the rain threatening to hammer down and a swirling wind, two nervous teams took a long ball approach which resulted in football of a low calibre.
The powerful Ondre Odain nearly notched for Huntingdon with a dipping volley which crashed off the bar and it was the hosts who were pressuring their visitors who looked languid in the first fifteen.
Huntingdon local lad Charlie Bowen created history in the 16th minute, becoming Town’s first ever FA Cup goal scorer at Jubilee Park. He managed to get on the end of an inswinging corner and nodded through a crowd to score to the home fans delight.
Daventry who are managed by ex Republic of Ireland legend Mark Kinsella go a mid game rollicking from the touch line and it seemed to work. The visitors scored two goals in four minutes midway through the half and turned the game in their favour.
Callum Burgess levelled after 22 minutes with a scrappy finish. Then disappointingly for Town, slack defending allowed Scott Cross to score for the step 4 outfit and give them the lead four minutes later, heading in from a free kick to give keeper Dave Beeny no chance.
By now the heavens had opened up and as the home fans gathered under the home stand to hide from the rain it became apparent on the pitch that the players were running out of ideas.
The home side huffed and puffed but the second half led to few chances from both sides.
The game was over and the journey ended with fifteen minutes to go as Mark Bellingham sealed Daventry's success a quarter of an hour from time, heading in from close range.
Town were no disgrace and can hold their heads high. A team full of local lads managed by Townie’s Rick Marheineke and Mark Furness can look forward to driving their on-field ambitions further with sole focus on the league.
After the game Town Chairman Paul Hunt introduced several key members of the Huntingdon set up. He spoke about future ambitions in what is an exciting time for a club.
The strategic message is clear; success on the pitch is only sustainable with commercial support off it and in order to be successful, these key elements need to complement each other and act as the driving force of the club.
With a gutsy team full of local lads and a business vision, it is now down to Town as a whole, to deliver.
Huntingdon: Dave Beeny, Declan Rogers, Dan Moyes, Josh Crick, Charlie Bowen, Ricky Dear, Jamie Blackwell, Joe Furness (Scott Beeny), Ondre Odain, Dan Drane (Ben Colmer), Joe Jordan (Carl Foreman).
