Probably a great player and a very good manager would be Stevie Copple
Playing career ended prematurely but I have never heard a bad word said about him.
Managing career, never really had a shot at the big time, maybe his choice but if you look at his record at Palace, Brighton and Reading, it is great.
Took Palace to a cup final then the next year 3rd in the Prem. Also when they were about to go bust he kept them up with less money than some of the UCL Prem clubs.
He did the same at Brighton.
Took Reading up with over 100 points, finished 7th in the Prem and it looks like he will take them up again.
I Know as a Palace fan he is regarded as a god and I wouldn't mind betting that Reading fans feel the same.
Its not all about the big clubs with big budgets.

Excellent point well made .... Do you think any of the other managers mentioned in this thread could do what coppell has done with those clubs This thread could take a new turn now .... Fergie - most successful manager on these shores ? Was a game away from getting the sack at utd back in the day

You can't argue with what Fergie has achieved but he was never a 'great' player. Mind you he was the first player to score a hat-trick against Rangers at Ibrox! ;D Cloughie had a fanastic scoring record - close to a goal a game - but his career was too short for him to become a true great. What he achieved as a manager with two unfashionable Midlands clubs was pretty special though. However, all the highlights came when he had Taylor with him. Does that make Fergie better?

To be honest TC i don't think we will see it that much because of the money these guys are on, If your a multi millionaire do yo want to go and manage Brighton?
Fergie did a great job at Aberdeen before United, European glory and all that.
The one to keep an eye on would be demotao(probably spelled wrong) at MK Dons he was a very good player.
Personally i don't think any one will emulate what old big edd did for both forest and derby. Now that man could walk on water.

What about the legend.... King Kenny Dalglish, won the double as player manager at Liverpool in "86", another league and FA Cup and then the league with Blackburn. Left Liverpool too soon but awesome player and manager!

Dalglish was a great player but he inherited an already excellent side to manage at Liverpool. At Blackburn he was the first manager to get a blank cheque book - which in fairness he spent well.
Compare that to the teams that Clough built on limited budgets and the 'kids' side that Ferguson brought through at United and I don't think King Kenny is in the same league.

What about the young guns potential especially the 3 dutch dudes Marco Van Blasts them Frank Rikjaard Ronald Koeman Klinnsman , thats an interesting one ... I know he's a fruit and nut bar but i still believe Hoddle had the makings of a great manager ... Think Hoddle could come again when he older Di matteo i think will be another wise / ince / poyet type but defo better than John Barnes and Tony Adams ;D Lippi , did he play

Apolman, i take your point about inheriting a quality side but everyone knows you never win anything with kids!!!! I also think Hoddle was a quality manager, just not the sharpest when it came to speaking out, given the right team and backing he could still do a job. As for Van Basten, one of the best players i have ever had the pleasure to watch in the flesh at his peak in at Milan!

Lippi did play but he was always getting booked for backchatting the ref.
Dalglish was only ever at Blackburn on Saturdays - Ray Harford did all the work. Kenny played golf all week.

Yeah can remember that being said at the time , perhaps the old saying about behind every great man there is a great women .... applies to managers ... Behind every great number 1 there is an even better number 2

I agree TC Taylor is the obvious one but i think Phil Brown was a big reason as to why Bolton did so well under Alladyce.

Yep Phil Brown is a good UN , also people dont realize that even though Wenger gets the credit its all really down to Pat Rice ;D ;D ;D Just kidding , down at the arsenal they call him ' tea and 2 sugars ' ;D On a serious note Liam Brady has had alot of input over the years with the young gunners
