I think its been one of the best sensibly contributed topics so far and still has the legs to continue considering the weather thats still to come. Its clear Newport suffered the same fate as us at Raunds that day. Being beaten by a good side and the ref didn't have the balls to call it off when it should have been. Still thats in the past now we move on don't we suffering the consequence and bear the cost of it.
such is life

Skip, it will be interesting to see what happens this weekend with forecasts of gales, downpours, floods, thunderstorms, pestilence, plagues of locusts, fire, brimstone, four horsemen of the apocalypse blah blah blah......
Actually - a question for the referees who have posted on here - would you postpone/abandon a game because of high winds*?
*(Please use separate thread for farting jokes)

I have actually watched a game that the ref stopped due to high winds. It wasn't a UCL game it was a County game, Northants V (cant remember now) and although there were very strong winds, the ref allowed it to start. The side kicking into the wind couldn't get out of their penalty box, let alone their half and at one point the goalkeeper kicked the ball from his hands upfield only for the wind to catch the ball and blow it just past his own post for a corner. At that point the ref said that the game couldn't continue an called it off. Prior to that every kick into the wind was being held up, even at floor level. Everyone agreed that it was a farce and justifiably abandoned.

Interesting - so the game was abandoned because it just got silly, farcical as you point out, and the conditions prevented a reasonable game of football being played?
Would you say that the players' safety was at all compromised? Or was it simply because the game couldn't be played properly?

nice touch bazza you never fail me! I would call a game off due to high winds as 1, i wouldnt want my hair to be messed up ! 2, the game would more than likely be a joke as many were on the 30th and you have to take into account that with such strong winds would there be a danager of the stands, floodlights etc.. being damaged and endangering the safety on players/officails/fans etc. As buggalugs says (think it was him) you have to have the balls to call a game off when it gets to that stage.
Happy now bazza, correct spelling = A+ ;D

Would you say that the players' safety was at all compromised? Or was it simply because the game couldn't be played properly? Players safety wasn't compromised at all but players were finding it extremely difficult to run against the wind and even with the wind behind them, they were being blown along not being able to stop/turn as you would normally. but as others have pointed out the wind can do damage to the ground/stadium and this may cause injury to spectators.

It was only a simple question to start with! Our pitch is fine thanks, had a game on it last Saturday, Mr Dungworth in the middle, he was happy to play and I was happy to let him. However, I've since spent about 12 hours(in the dry slots this week) getting it playable for tomorrow's game against S & L and at 3.30pm it looked fantastic. Still not had a ref volunteer to drive my tractor or push my marker! £3.50 an hour, eh bazzaboy, at least that's a profit, it COSTS me a fortune to watch you all perform and how well you ALL do perform! (What's that smell?) Tomorrow we have Mr Howitt from Grantham and he just loves WHITE lines, not one's that may be slightly cream but pure white!!!!!!!(Just like his forehead)

Yes Skip I think thats right. A poor decision exacerbated by the ref not having the guts to admit he'd made a mistake! It's always been my view that a clubs first priority even before they start spending on players should be the playing surface. Newports situation in the Ouse Valley floodplain means a lot of hard work goes into producing a reasonable pitch and it is frustrating to see all the go to nothing. And there was no reason! You might accept it if we were nearing the end of April with 10 games to play but both Newport and Wellingborough are well ahead. A couple of weeks ago I was joking that if we kept playing at this rate our season would be finished by March! Just so silly!

Huh. Theres me being nice to referees on here and w'bs forum but after today's game at Raunds v St Neots I think the three officials ought to be sent to Iraq as practice on the gallows. I suppose I will have to grin and bear it believe they are only human afterall
