nope! Thats not what I'm on about. Off topic is when the original subject is no longer the subject. Those rules you have posted JW are about abuse! I am asking how many replies constitute going off topic for it to get locked or is it when one gets bored? The act of good conversation or CHATTER is starting subject then deviate to create a different stream or renew interest. Just because it off topic doesn't make a bad or abusive item. What are we suppose to do if every time the chatter deviates do we have to start a new thread? We are not on this full time, we jump in and out when we can. Whilst reducing and monitoring abuse is important, lets not start censorship on content or context, otherwise chatter will die from boredom. Sorry I am on my soap box again We should have a grumpy old gits section!

I suppose the removal of guest viewing helps the site go down that road a little.
Very hard to get right and very easy to get wrong. I know from personal experience modding is thankless.
And whilst I share you concerns on the volume of traffic for the site, someone (in our case Gav) has to make the decisions.
Maybe a re-write of the rules could help clarify?

Experience of other forums suggests we are very tolerant, however comparing a passionate football forum with one about, say flying, is extremely difficult and therefore until worthless name calling comes into it, most threads rumble on.
That said, some individuals, regardless, are keen on the wind up, slurring and generally being inhospitable to others.
Unfortunately you won't be aware of the extremely severe names that some of you were called by a now "banned member", purely to cause trouble recently. And it was without doubt the worst post ever posted in that respect. To get to that level of language abuse, on a forum where impressionable teens and in some cases adults are able to view it, is simply not tolerated, and I'm pleased to say in most cases respected, so I will not be swerved on this.
I am aware that the off topic ruling has had it's contentious issues and derives from initial St Neots/Kings Lynn banter which hijacked a lot of initially unrelated threads, which hopefully has settled down, so perhaps a more relaxed view can be taken on that.
As for guest viewing restrictions being placed, that is partly a membership boosting idea, which has worked well before, which if you are a member - why not post? Pleased to see that some have already and by making the Introduce Yourself section available, perhaps new and old members alike will do just that.
That's enough from me, but I am not big brother, and certainly not going to hide away. You can find me at Desborough occasionally, son permitting, and always happy to chat.
Gavin
