until we get 3 officials things wont change. its something we have to accept i'm afraid. Not really, there have been many changes, Subs boards, regulation footballs, ETC The league can enforce a minimum qualification if they want. We have used 3 Linesman since being in the UCL our main linesman is an ex-referee, and at least 1 of the other 2 is qualified to a basic standard. I'm sure that there could be a required standard, must admit though, thought it was more of a problem last year

can see what you mean scooter, when recieving some 'stick' for a couple of dubious decisions at bugbrooke on saturday, the kempston lino responded to the badgers' faithful by repeatedly asking 'what's the score though, what's the score?' after rovers 85th minute goal.....the innocence of youth!?!? !

Is this a reference to the St Ives linesman who i believe was the difference between St Ives getting promoted and having to stay in Div 1. Harsh but true. This year its been good many fair club lino's around inc Sileby, Huntingdon, Corinths and of course Blissy.

I would the team with the most amazing revival is Burton PW and the regular lino is shall we say a little quick at raising his flag in the interests of his own club!!

Picking up on Ianh's thread - Linesmen are a vital component to make the UCL 1st Div a credible league. In my view, in addition to the points Ianh made, it should be in the rulebooks for the Linesment to be kitted out properly with say .. a UCL Linesman Tracksuit top so that the they are clearly identifiable as Linesmen and look the part. The paying spectators would then at least be of the impression that they were watching a game with credible officials. If we are going to get fined for not using subs boards (that are useless since the numbers on the front are different to the back so that spectators behind are non the wiser.. but that is another story) then we may as well have it defined that the Linesmen should be dressed correctly - after all they can severly influence the outcome of any game (- something subs boards do not). Also, with the growth in encouraging young men/women to take up the referee courses - each team should/must be able to entice/encourage a young or eager qualified person to do a job for the team and give them vital experience to further their careers in refereeing. You never know - if every team did this then there may be enough Officials in a few years time for the League to have 2 qualified Linesmen/Assistant Referees for all UCL Div 1 matches.

I agree with the credibility issue raised above, and I must admit that the club linesman issue is the major reason I don't attend Div 1 games as a neutral.
The 'official kit' idea sounds like a good step. Have the league ever tried to change / experiment with the system? Do lineos get rated by the refs for example?

Agreed (I think - if I'm reading the above post correctly). I think each RA should run an "official" linesman's course, audited by the County FA, and all clubs should be obliged to have a number of linesman trained - that number being the number of teams plus 2.
These guys could be randomly assessed to make sure standards are kept up.
This is actually a model that can be used at many levels, and would improve the standards of youth football no end.

- this area definitely needs some element of formalisation and control.
I hope that the UCL league look at this. It really is a contentious issue in the League - it does sometimes bring down the the games to resemble Sunday league 4th Division - not a Step 6 Structure.
It's not too difficult to enforce and would not cost the clubs too much to Kit out their Lino - afterall they kit out 17 players already every year - it should be an accepted Cap Ex to the club. Hopefully help can be encouraged by the league towards training if necessary.
Also, just like scouting for players - the Linesman position should be treated as seriously as getting a good player. Get this issue sorted & maybe the fixtures will attract people like Philt back to watch the games - cos I am convinced he is not the only person put off the league through this issue!!
I can understand the central shortage of referees hence we only have one official, and maybe if the clubs took this issue more seriously the clubs can help foster and encourage the Central Officials of the Future.
PS Well done the league for standardising the balls - now to the next big issue of the day.
