....we won the cup!
Spencer 1 Corby Town 0
Spencer lifted the Hillier Cup in an exciting game that was decided by Adam Wigley's 14th minute strike. Spencer attacked from the off, and didn't seem fazed by the supposed higher level of the opposition, nor by the noisy Corby Town fans who made up the vast majority of the attendance of 350 The opening period saw some neat passing football from Spencer and the majority of play was in the Corby half.
After 14 minutes the Corby keeper failed to hold a cross from a Spencer free kick on the left touchline, the defence failed to adequately clear it, and Adam Wigley drilled home from 16 yards.
Corby, although quick on the break, seldom caused the Spencer defence any problems, their sole effort being a shot that brought an excellent save from Oliver Urquhart towards the end of the first half.
In the second half, Corby pushed a defender into the midfield and played three up-front, and whilst this gave Corby more of the play in the Spencer half, they still didn't particularly threaten, other than forcing another save at the feet of their striker.
Spencer had a couple more opportunities to increase the score, but the shots blazed high and wide, or straight into the arms of the Corby keeper. MattCollins had a golden opportunity to kill the game off in teh last five minutes, when Darren Frost broke down the right to make a two-on-two situation with the Corby defence. Collind drifted out to the left post and Frost found him with an excellent pass, but one-on-one with the keeper, teh Corby custodian saved well with his legs.
The referee saw fit to add four minutes of time at the end of the second half, which saw Corby nearly salvage the game, and it was heroic defending in a crowded penalty area that kept the Spencer sheet clean.
Corby's final throw of the dice was the obligatory corner with the goalkeeper joining the attack, but this came to nothing, the referee blew the whistle, and the cup was Spencer's!
Well done to Spencer's young team, a well-deserved victory and a good advert for UCL football.
