Below is an article featured in the Raunds Town v Brackley Town programme, written by the administrator of midlandsnonleaguefootball.co.uk If your interested?
Northants Senior ‘Hillier’ Cup
Most home fans will be aware that Raunds Town won the Hillier cup as recently as 2005, the only other success being 14 years earlier in 1991. The best season for Brackley Town in the County Cup being 1989 when they finished runners-up.
The 2005/06 season saw Raunds Town lose to eventual winners Northampton Spencer, 3-2 in the semi-final. The following season saw Brackley Town reach the semi-final, this time losing, 2-1 to Woodford United, who themselves had easily disposed of Raunds in the first round 6-1.
This season’s final will be played in March.
Hillier Cup Recent Winners
2005 Raunds Town
2006 Northampton Spencer
2007 Rushden & Diamonds
A cup of Records
Sadly not all the senior clubs in Northamptonshire have been entering the Hillier Cup in recent seasons. One of the most successful clubs in the history of the competition, however, are Kettering Town who have won the senior cup on 28 occasions but of course lost to Northampton Spencer in the first round this season. Other clubs with a great history in the competition include Corby Town and Rothwell Town who have both been winners of the County Cup six times.
A couple of club records have been set and still stand today from games in the Senior Cup, Rushden & Diamonds biggest victory was an eight goal victory over Desborough Town in the 1994/95 season. Desborough can take some heart however from the fact that they have been County Champions four times. Another record set in the competition is the record attendance at Long Buckby’s Station Road ground for the 1984 final where the Bucks lost to Kettering in front of a record 750 fans.
Lets hope whoever wins tonight’s tie goes on to lift the trophy in the final in March.
