When is the league going to stop this madness of selfish clubs fielding a virtually all the first teamers in a reserve team and then thrash the opposition. The league should seriously think about restricting first teamers to a max of 4 and a team player is regarded as a first team player by playing 4 consecutive games in the first team. The 4 4 rule.
What do you think to that?

I guess it depends on what you believe the purpose of the reserve team is.
If you believe the reserves exist simply to support the first team, then if there is a reserve fixture and no first team fixture, the manager would be perfectly within his rights to insist that his first teamers play the fixture, so he can try stuff, keep momentum going, use it as an additional training session etc.
If you believe the reserves are there as a team in their own right, and a load of first teamers are included just to try to help win the Reserve League or Cup, then that's not on at all.

That could also back fire as players could be playing to many games. The Reserves are also good for first team players coming back from injury. The reserves are there to support the first team with up coming players (as well as the youth teams), so really its unfair to play first teamers in the reserves for the sake of it etc... But i do agree with you Skip as some teams in the UCL have larger squads than other teams and can spare first teamers for the reserves. They should limit it to 4 or 5 at the most but i am not sure how that could be monitored?

I think whilst everyone feels it can be unfair, it is accepted that the Reserve team are there to support the first team. If the manager feels the first team need a run-out then he plays first teamers. The balance though has to be found as the reserve players will all walk if overlooked just because the first team want a game. Whitworths do not have a game from 14th - 25th April but the reserves have a number of mid week games and I guess Joe will want to keep some of the first team players active. Especially if we need to win that last game of season to win league.

I agree with most of what has been said in this string. I think it is unfair for clubs to put first teamers in when they haven't got a game, but equally I think that the reserves should play a supporting role for the 1st team. There are a number of reasons for 1st teamers playing for the reserves as have already been mentioned - another is to drop a player down into the reserves to try to get his confidence/form back.
I don't know about anyone else but on the very rare occasion this happened at Bourne last year the 1st teamers didn't do anything special and if anything spoiled the rhythm of the reserve team - they certainly didn't get better results with them in the side!! - spoiled the balance etc etc. The odd one or two appeared to have the attitude that they weren't going to try in the reserves!! Sad but true.
All in all I think that if first teamers play in the reserves when both teams have a game then that should be ok - the main problem appears to be the few occasions - certainly more towards the end of the season, when the first team do not have a game and the reserves do!! In these circumstances I think some ruling should be made - but the 4 4 rule may be difficult to uphold.

Our reserves starting tonight play Tues,Thurs,Sat,Mon,Wed,Sat,Tue,Thu,Sat,Tue. Ten games in twenty two days. Whilst I am in general agreement that 1st team players should not play in the reserve teams en bloc. I would expect there to be some rotation of players to give others a rest and in addition there are those players who cannot make a 6.00 p.m. start.

You could take the view that if the reserves ARE there just to support the first team, then is it really necessary to fulfill all those fixtures?

Newport Pagnell Reserves used a total of 51 players so far this season! A combination of reserves, first teamers and under 18s etc.... You could take the view that if the reserves ARE there just to support the first team, then is it really necessary to fulfill all those fixtures? Yes. As they have cups and league positions to play for!
