Having played in plenty of reserve squads, won reserve division 1 and 2 and knowing my present manager (who also won Res Div 1) so well, I can firmly support your comments. Also knowing our mutual friend onestep who has now taken on the role as reserve manager, it's a tough old job.
It's not your ship to sail from the club's perspective, its not you who determines who is playing where each week and consistency is a very hard word to come by. Logistically, it's a harder job, but in defence of the 1st team managers throughout all leagues and clubs where there are reserve teams, I'd say the pressure for results is not as great.
That doesn't take away from the fact that it's as hard to juggle players, positions and availability as running a sunday side full of alcoholics - you just don't know who you're going to get playing an hour before kick off.

There is a thinking in football that the lower in league you go , the easier it is WELL IT BLOODY AIN'T ! How many ressy managers do you know , do it for years ? Exactly its a tough job I can say from experience that the lower you go , the harder it gets . All the attributes you need as a manager to do well at any level need to be utilized to the maximum , especially at reserve level At reserve level all the things you need to do well in your team , simply are hardly ever there especially if your dealing with teams / clubs that have or were struggling or a struggling in any other areas regarding players , quality , quantity etc To do a job with teams like this takes an unbelievable effort to get anything like a winning team . The coaching that needs to be done is massive and your man -management even bigger I would just like to finish by praising all the reserve managers who do the impossible job week in week out and also remind others with that " school of thought " I agree with you SS. The "Clueless Muppet" as you called him at Bourne did very well as a Ressie Manager. Just in case you didn't bother to read my last note about this - his Ressie record was: 2002-03 3rd place in UCL Res Div 2 (missed promotion by 1 point). 2003-04 UCL res Div 2 champions, Ancaster Cup winners & Fair play winners.2004-05 UCL Res Div 1 mid table. 2005-06 UCL Res Div 1 champions, Ancaster Cup winners. So you see the 1st seasion to get a squad together and suss out the opposition (2002-03 and 2004-05) before pushing and being successful in the second season (2003-04 & 2005-06). Do you think you can do it at Corinths?? Hope so otherwise you may have to wear the "Clueless Muppet" hat youself!! Good luck.

Yorkshireman - that's a quality record for the Bourne Ressie Manager. Cap officially dothed.
SS - sorry mate, but you've tripped up a touch there fella - "the best run of results in the UCL" - not quite as impressive as the undefeated season your 1st team of the time achieved..........
BUT, the 1st team manager does have a major impact on the reserves. And to throw this into the pot - BSMFC won the reserve Div 1 title in 2003 or 4 yet the first team got murdered each week - so I'd rather see a 1st team do well and hope the club and squad ethic rubs off and the reserves do well too.
Being in Res Div 1 does help the club though, closes the gap in quality for those that are trying to break into the 1st team due to the quality of opposition (nothing better than a young prospect having to mark a UCL Prem striker coming back from injury - great experience and should sharpen them for the 1st team experience once it comes along)

Best run in the reserve division yes but Whits 1st team and Sleaford had better runs. I can tell you though that the higher you get in anything whether it is sport or business, the easier it gets, you just have different challenges and differing levels of responsibility / accountability. Managing Reserves much harder than a 1st team, unless your 1st team manager is so set in his ways that he does not acknowledge the talent being brought through in a quality reserve side.........and this does happen often from what I have seen. Nicely set-up So SS...... was running whitworths reserves last season harder than Joe's job leading the 1st team to the success they achieved bearing in mind you have repeatedly questioned his ability and you were a little critical that he didnt raid the talent you unearthed in your reserve team............I think the statement made was your reserves would beat Joes 1st team. Implication being your job last season may have been easier than joes
