First and foremost - I want to make it absolutely clear that I know how much work is involved in producing and maintaining a web-site. I'm looking at the websites I said I'd review as though they were for a League 2 or Conference club. Possibly a little harsh, but that's the way I'm looking at it, and to be honest, if I was doing a club website I'd find the one I thought was best and mercilessly pillage it! Anyway, the point is that I don't want any of the webmasters to feel hurt or insulted or unduly criticised by my comments.
Having said all that (and you'll see the same text cut and pasted into other reviews) the Boston Town website is extremely professional.
What I Liked
Just about everything - the navigation was good - always had the menu on the left on every screen so you could jump directly to where you wanted to go.
All the information was there - fixtures, appearances, player profiles, match reports, club news, links to other sites - just about everything!
What I didn't like - hardly anything, so these points will seem overly picky.
More detail in the player profiles? Age, previous clubs, that kind of stuff?
"Click-to-enlarge" on the photos?
A link to UCL Chatter? (naturally!)
More detail in the match reports, including attendances, names of match officials etc
I was also surprised that there was nothing at all of a commercial nature - nothing about sponsorship opportunities or anything (unless I missed it)
I was also bemused as to why the site is part of a community site for Bradford in Yorkshire. Not that it affects anything but.......why?
Scoring
1. Ease of use and navigation - 10
2. Scope, breadth and quality of information - 9
3. Quality and bias of match reports - 7
4. Overall impression of technical quality, look, feel etc - 9
5. Commercial aspects (does it help raise money for the club?) - 0
6. Editorial quality (does it read well?) - 9
7. Overall score (add up the scores and divide by six) - 7.3
Summary - excellent, should be more than 7.3 but I suppose we need to have a level playing field.... and if anyone starting a site from scratch is looking for a role model, I'd look here.
