www.cogenhoeunited.co.uk/
First and foremost - I want to make it absolutely clear that I know how much work is involved in producing and maintaining a web-site. I'm looking at the websites I said I'd review as though they were for a League 2 or Conference club. Possibly a little harsh, but that's the way I'm looking at it, and to be honest, if I was doing a club website I'd find the one I thought was best and mercilessly pillage it! Anyway, the point is that I don't want any of the webmasters to feel hurt or insulted or unduly criticised by my comments.
So ....... someone from Spencer reviewing the Cogenhoe site? Shome mishtake shurely..... MUUAHAHAHAHAHA....!
Somebody has tried very hard to make this an extremely technically-advanced site, but for me, their hard work is to little avail. There seem to be a lot of Java applets or similar sub-programs going on, and it just seems to complicate things.
What I Liked
Lots of information, good quality photos, lively (at times) message board. I like the Links page with all the logos and the map look-up to get to ther clubs. Plenty of info on the front page, lots of nice little tools and bits of info. Generally quite welcoming.
What I didn't like
In addition to all the Java bits going on, I generally found the navigation unwieldy. Like a number of sites, it's great having the menu buttons on the left, but unless they are in a different frame, they disappear as you go down the page, reducing their convenience
Maybe more detail in the player info? Also the navigation here, you click on the player, then you get the bigger photo and the info. Maybe the info next to a small-ish pic, then click to enlarge the pic?
The fixtures, results and match reports don't really do it for me. You need to do a lot of searching of text to find what you want, and I prefer the usual tabular form where you just get that clubs fixtures and results, and you can click on the line to go to a match report.
Also the News page - I'd much rather see some news than just links to external sites. By all means link to other sites, but it's nicer when it's the club telling me their news, rather than just telling me where I can go and read it.
Scoring
1. Ease of use and navigation - 5
2. Scope, breadth and quality of information - 8
3. Quality and bias of match reports (based on last season's) - 7
4. Overall impression of technical quality, look, feel etc - 6
5. Commercial aspects (does it help raise money for the club?) - 6
6. Editorial quality (does it read well?) - 7
7. Overall score - 6.5
Summary
Most of the info needed is in there, it's just not as easy as it might be to get it out.
I feel guilty knocking this site, and certainly don't want it to be viewed as a Spencer/Cogenhoe thing. I'm calling it as I see it, and welcome further discussion.
