Prompted by Confused.com's rant at the referee.
My theory is that the FA/UEFA/FIFA could do stuff to cure all these things. They could introduce goal-line technology. The ref-in-the-stand giving the man in the middle more information. Stop dicking about with the offside law and keep it simple. Better training, assessment and investment for referees to reduce the number of questionable decisions.
If they did all this, there would be fewer controversial decisions, and a far greater percentage of results would be as the form guide dictated.
So my theory is that the powers-that-be don't want this. They want controversy to fuel a million heated discussions in pubs, chat rooms, TV punditry up and down the country. If it were more predictable, then there'd be less to talk about and the sport's popularity would start to erode.
Any takers?

I do agree with the "controversy fuels pub and punditry arguments" bit - it's the classic get out clause for the men in black fraternity.
Not sold on the whole feet dragging being completely intentional however. I'm not sure they're clever enough to contrive such a conspiracy!!
We obviously can positively affect the elite standard of officiating by using goal line technology and I wholly support the man-in-the-stand/4th official review system. It wont slow the game down and it wont affect flow.
At grass-roots level though, one thing that strikes me in relation to respect campaigns and the general abuse ref's get is that they have the POWER to curb it, written in plain English in the L.O.A.F - and at any ref's meeting I've attended or been involved in - they always cite "managing the game" as a reason not to send people off for foul and abusive.
Thus, "they get what they deserve" in a broad fashion in terms of abuse from players.
If they want respect and authority, please have the sense to employ the Laws as written - it's not an impossibility.

Your living in cuckoo land mate, not everyone is as competent and confident as you and not everyone plays football in the nice areas that you do or been fortunate enough to have been brought up in such an educated manner as yourself I have seen referees being knocked out by punches and taken hospital while trying to use their power to CURB it on the field, which is where the bread and butter of the action takes place. Until there is Zero tolerance and people that slate them are socially outcasted (like that of the supporter who throws things on the pitch) with abuse of refs then the standard will never improve... Lets have a hand count, who fancies being a referee ? On Buggs' point, i think there is an element of truth in your claim

So what your saying is this, that other than coming onto an open forum under a username that hides your identity and slagging off referees in an out of order manner, you have nothing else really to offer on the subject

Well Einstein, hopefully some of the referees that come on here and read your original post and probably expected more to jump on the bandwagon therefore reinforcing some of their views that they are banging their heads against a brick wall, realize that there are many people out there who appreciate the almost impossible job they try their best to do week in week out without exception and accept their mistakes with dignity and want to see them continue and improve.
As for being over dramatic, thinking back to your original rant there seems something of a paradox here

All its needs is a blue police box and the Doctor! Who? There is a conspiracy here because having frequented certain referees gatherings myself, the general motto is f**k us about and we will f**k you!! So the true answer to all this is to show respect even if they are poor on the day and you will get it back! personally, I find the 'effing clowns' in the stands

Guys chill out, the original posting is about one poor Ref out of 4 this season that we have had. If everyone else rates the officiating of your games I'm sure the % would be plus 60 which is good feed back for the men in black. The respect thing between players and refs is ironed out during the game and not before.! There doing a great job most of the time so with negative feedback there should always be a positive finish. Think it's called the feedback sandwich positive, negative, positive. Refs your doing a good job, we,ve had one bad egg but I'm sure he will come good well done. There we go everyone happy now.

I'm well chilled out, if i was not then confused.com would already have had his front door kicked in by now ;D
The original post was disrespectful and over the top and is not helpful when the game is struggling for numbers to officiate from grassroots up.
Postings such as his will only ever discourage potential outstanding individuals in our footballing society who may want to do the job.

BPW...
Thank the Lord that i never really upset you then. I quite like my front door!!!!
I hope infact after reading your post that no one on here ever upsets you as i have this vision in my head of an angry forum addict smashing doors down across the united counties of anyone who challenges you on here and riles you
Not sure the lame cuddly toy penguin enhances your reputation as a marauding door smasher... maybe you need to change it to a Lion or a Dragon or maybe even a Viking
Peace man !!!!! X
