For the record, confused is absolutely fine in my book having a rant about officials. The standard is poor, and I'm comparing the standard to steps below step 5, not the the premiership. My point being, the standard is no better than sunday mornings in some cases! There are some occasions that you get some outstanding officials, but all too often that isn't the case. I blame the FA and FIFA or whoever else, as it's those people that set rules and train ref's etc.
Posters on these forums are extremely quick to criticise players and managers etc, so what's wrong with officials being criticised? All too often officials turn up with with either 'little man syndrome', or having received some grief from the mrs at home, or to massage some type of hitler ego.... the outcome is too often a spolied match, players losing money through bookings etc all because a ref has little or no comprehension of 'man management', how to talk to people (let alone players!) and a lack of football experience. Club officials, supporters, players, sponsors all put in a lot of free time, put in a lot of money etc and as a result deserve better. Everyone will have a 'nightmare' at some point, be it a player, manager or a ref. But there's way too many nightmare ref performances for my liking! Like I said, I blame the authorities. It's down to them to make it a more attractive proposition, with rule changes etc to combat dissent and changes to help officials. Result might then be former players taking an interest and people of sound mind etc instead of some of the jumped up little hitler's that take to the pitch at the moment!! There are a lot of exceptions, some officials are of sound mind and perfectly reasonable, will manage situations and players / managers extremely well. But they are few and far between.
I'll repeat it again, I don't blame the ref's, I blame the authorities that sign them off as competent, and those that ultimately define the role. It's those people that are to blame. And don't tell me there isn't the money to train ref's etc when the FA spend £6M per season on Capello!!
....Oh no.... I think I might have to face the wrath of the vicious penguin! My front door is locked and bolted!

come on guys its only your opinion that some of the referees are poor and it only comes about when your side as suffered a bad result. Generally, if the winning opposing fans agree with you that the ref was poor, then are only being diplomatic and soften your side's inept loss. Been there wore the T-shirt..
With reference to Sunday football referees, given the fact that some ( as in a minority) of the players are still drunk morons with caveman mentality and have to share a brain cell between them, then just may be the standard will be poor. Lets face it, there are less and less people willing to take on such a odious task unless you are a hard as nails penguin of course?

I love a good officials rant. However, we're going round in circles here.
When I have a stinker, and let's face it, that's more often than not in most people's view, I expect my manager, team mates and opposition to give me stick. That's part of the job description in amateur sport. When the opposition full back is getting torn to bits by a winger, I'm first in line to give him stick too. It's part of the game. When a referee and assistant miss a 7 yard offside (like saturday), and we concede, I'd like to think that I'm entitled to challenge his competence. Respect is earned, not a given right. And the campaign fails to understand this basic principle.
In light of comments about Ref's getting threats, battered and physically abused - that's more a problem with society and individuals than our sport. Let's face it - 6'8 number 8's in Rugby could crush a ref with one hand and don't - it's the type of person who's being officiated that causes those problems in relation to threats and physical abuse in football.
People who threaten to attack referees are the type that will threaten any innocent kid in town just to massage an ego and flex their steroid muscles.
No rules need changing at all to improve the protection of referees - education and experience does and lest we forget - they still have cards in their pocket and are empowered to use them.
Most ref's don't send people off for foul and abusive because deep down, they know they weren't fit enough, sharp enough, good enough or experienced enough to make the right decision in the first place. Secretly, they know they're getting abuse because they probably made a mistake. The difference (and contributing reason for more red misted players) is that everyone else in the sport has to take responsibility for their mistakes and man up and take the stick and grief - referees do not at this level.
Until they are transparent and forthcoming in acknowledging their mistakes, the relationship between officials and players won't improve.

But I will add - the ones that DO take responsibility and engage in a respectful discussion with players are greatly appreciated and I get on very well with most. By default, I know a lot of them and get on pretty well with them - so they're not all bad. It's the "one bad apple" syndrome.

If I don't abuse me, there's plenty of others to do it for me. It softens the blow if you beat them to it!!
