Subs make the difference
Although the bad run continues, with no wins in 5 games, the players should feel more cheated out of the points in this match away at Desborough, rather than blaming themselves.
Raunds dominated the first 15 minutes of the game, and the relentless pressure resulted in a few shots and a free kick. However Desborough did enough to hold off the Shopmates in that busy period, and managed to get into the game when Raunds began to sit back.
A number of half chances were created by both teams. Callum Ridgway with a shot after 30 minutes, and later, Dane Ridgway played a ball forward to Matt Curtis, who flicked on to Taylor for the best worked chance for Raunds – the shot wide. It was Desborough who took advantage though, when a minute before the break Ar Tarn scored a header which rebounded off both the post and the goalkeeper before crossing the line.
The second half looked brighter for Raunds, and after substitutes were made the game began to swing in their favour. Jamie Russell lead the attack for the Shopmates, with a shot after 55 minutes, and a pin point corner ten minutes later, substitute Ash Smith unlucky not to make it count. Fellow sub Danny Thompson shone for the Shopmates down the right hand side, taking the ball past several defenders and delivering a low cross into the six yard box, Matt Curtis firing past the keeper, scoring low down in the left corner.
Ten minutes later Matt Curtis scored again after Ian Symington knocked the ball on, but a late decision by the ambivalent linesman denied Raunds the winner – off side the reason given. Symington had a further attempt with a shot on goal as Raunds steamed up field in search of the winner, but disaster struck 3 minutes from time when poor defensive organisation allowed Desborough to fire home from short range, Chris Jones left without a chance between the sticks.
Still determined to salvage a point, the away team pressed forward, Ian Symington denied twice by defenders, and Thompson’s brilliant effort expertly saved by the home goalkeeper. Matt Curtis was also given a chance with a header, but accuracy suffered in the stressful dying moments of the game, and the ball fell wide of the mark. Full Time Desborough Town 2 – 1 Raunds Town.
