Went and watched this with a couple of mates and enjoyed it. It was a good little battle and with some direction and nous from the sidelines during the 2nd half then Whitworths could have held on for a win or scored a 2nd to nail the game.
Great winner from the Thrapston player (Devon Ellwood i think) with the last kick off the game but imagine the Whitworths players must be gutted. They worked tirelessly for each other and they played the game hard and rough. Freeman, Sharp, Holley, Mallows and Gent all putting in great shifts with determination. They looked to have Thrapo rattled at one stage but it was not to be as the Thrapston machine began to take over in the last 20 and lucky Joe rides again.
I must add that i think the Thrapston side compared to the Whitworths side that Joe managed to league victory is not a patch on that Whitworths side. While i think Thrapston will win this league easily in the end (which is minus Irchester and PNS this season,) it is not a team to fear. I have seen them a couple of times now and i imagine that Joe will be working hard to strengthen his squad in depth.
If the Whitworth management had been brave enough to chuck another man closer to their forward in 2nd half then they could have got a much relished victory over their former manager.
Without a shadow of doubt, for Whitworths to be where they are in the league at this moment in time is a travesty if not a crime. Over the years, no manager would ever have survived an opening to the season like this with a club that wants success.
They have good players and decent support but lack direction and confidence from the side. Perhaps the management have been knocked for a six with the start to season and players coming and going and that is not an easy situation but a club like Whitworths ought to be doing much better.
Great effort from the Whitworths lads though, you could see that they really wanted it and with that type of attitude then one would imagine that they will climb the league.
Unlucky Whitworths but fair play Thrapston. At this level (Div1), Joe has the knack of winning.
Good game

Good summary Mr Smith, I thought Whitworths put in a very good shift. I have watched them several times this season and never once did they perform like that. I agree with how they played, hard and rough as you said but they scored a good goal and went ahead deservedly. I was surprised they didn't make the changes you mentioned also. We didn't perform in the first half and found ourselves 1 down. Second half we were more in control and maybe should have scored more, but a winner at anytime will do. If Whits continue to play like that then they will be fine, but we can and will play better. Cup games are to be won, we did just that. Fortunate or Lucky I prefer that our character and perseverance is what got us that win; and its the win counts. Appreciate your honest assessment though.

I understand through the player's grapevine that Whitworths tactics were to go for penalties because they would win on them! Clearly they hadn't done their homework regarding the Thrapo goalkeeper!! ;D
