Prepare yourselves for conflict..... here comes the Raunds Town report
Wellingborough lucky, Raunds frustrated
This was always a highlight on the fixture lists of both clubs, if not for the few miles distance, then for the intertwined recent history between players and officials of Wellingborough and Raunds. This aside the game seemed to become less exiting the more it progressed, the second half showing how Wellingborough’s experience allowed them to kill off the game.
Disaster struck for Raunds early on, the referees decision directly handing Wooding a goal after 3 minutes from a well struck penalty. The Shopmates picked themselves up though, and Callum Ridgway had a close header. Wellingborough didn’t let off the pressure either and Chris Jones was called into action a number of times.
23 minutes in Matt Curtis hit the bar, and three minutes later both Curtis and Frid teamed up to play Callum Ridgway through who slotted the ball into the bottom corner to equalise. Matt Curtis again, a few minutes later, had a near miss and threatened Hughes’s goal.
Wellingborough managed to gain the lead again, however, with key man Jon Mitchell scoring his after 36 minutes. Lee Dorrington was then forced to save the ball off the line after continuous Wellingborough pressure, yet it was Danny Frid who ended the half on a brighter note, having a good shot on target which momentarily scared the home fans.
The second half was nothing other than dull, and the first real action came 75 minutes in, when Matt Curtis banged home a penalty to equalise, however Darren Collins replied for Wellingborough two minutes later and proceeded to kill the game off. Despite Jed Ainge being shown a red card for the home side, and Raunds scoring a disallowed goal, little could be done to change the scoreline, Daniel Thompson’s, Matt Curtis’s, and Ash Smith’s attempts at goal merely acts of frustration. Full time: Wellingborough 3-2 Raunds.
Key Players: Matt Curtis and Callum Ridgway
