F.A. Cup
Extra Preliminary Round
Long Eaton United 0 Huntingdon Town 4
After years of waiting Huntingdon Town hit the big time and played their first FA Cup match in their history.
The days of playing down the river in the lower leagues seem light years away as Huntingdon boss Rick Marheineke took his team through against Long Eaton, who play in the Baris Northern Counties East League.
A much fancied Long Eaton side may argue that Nathan Parker, Paul Gamble, Martin Bowles, Blaine Hancock and Chris Murdock were all unavailable but in all fairness, they were out thought, out muscled and out played by a Huntingdon Team showing the spirit and togetherness of a team filled with players who were clearly gleaming with pride at the prospect of playing in the FA Cup.
Declan Rogers' 21st minute goal split the sides at the interval and a Joe Jordan double after 48 and 56 minutes gave Town a stranglehold on the tie.
Jordan scored his first after racing away from his marker to score and within eight minutes the same player had wrong-footed a defender from the edge of the box, following some neat approach play by his team-mates, creating a three goal cushion only ten minutes into the second period.
Huntingdon smelt blood and Town savaged their woeful hosts further with five minutes remaining when Rogers got his second of the game, via a clinical strike from eighteen yards and condemned Long Eaton to their worst Grange Park defeat in the FA Cup for twenty-three years.
Manager Rick Marheineke appears to have instilled a discipline within his team that is filled with Huntingdon locals both youthful and experienced and with Jake Waterworth marshalling the defence, Town marched into the next qualifying round with a clean sheet where they will face fellow Division One side Bugbrooke St Michael.
St Ives town scrapped through winning 3-2 against Debenham LC with the WestWood road pitch being the subject to a debate as to its poor condition in what is considered the Worlds Greatest knock out cup
