Huntingdon Town 8 Potton United 0
27TH August 2011
Revenge. Sweet Revenge.
On the 8th November 2003, Huntingdon Town were destroyed six nil by Potton United.
Eight years later, Huntingdon went two goals better on a day that signalled thier intent to seriously contend for the league.
That day in November won’t mean a lot to the current players as none of them barring Carl Foreman featured but the remarkable score line proves that the tide has turned and instead of being content with mid table or a top six finish, Town should push for a promotion spot.
Six different scorers hit Town hard all those years ago and it was six different scorers that ripped the heart out of a poor Potton side, that are light-years away in class of 2003 that was inspired by the Donnelley brothers.
Town have changed and evolved and manager Rick Marheineke has mixed UCL experienced players like Dan Moyes, Dave Beeny and Ryan Spencer with young blooded superstars like Ben Colmer and Charlie Bowen and it was Colmer who opened the scoring after eighteen minutes.
Ex St Ives main man Jamie Blackwell’s effort in the 31st minute prompted a flurry of goals with Colmer scoring his second five minutes later and Declan Rogers joining in seven minutes before half time, keeping up his good goal scoring form.
Town started the second half in the same form as they finished the first, which is sentiment to their attacking style of play.
Dan Drane netted after 48 minutes, and Blackwell added his second two minutes later. Joe Jordan took the home tally to seven after 54 minutes and Dan Moyes completed the scoring with six minutes remaining.
The Huntingdon teams of the UCL era have been guilty of an ill disciplined mentality that has led to inconsistent yo yo types of seasons where good form has been followed up by a lengthy poor run of games that has resulted in a lack of progress.
If Town are to rid themselves of the shackles of being no more than a team who would probably make a very good Kershaw league team, they will need to prove their worth and deliver consistent results that should allow them to push for promotion come May.
In 2003, Potton went on to gain promotion to the UCL Premier and Andi Rossi’s team finished second bottom. On this showing, it would be no surprise if the teams finish in the same positions, albeit with Town deservedly being on top.
Huntingdon: Dave Beeny, S Coulson, Ryan Spencer, Josh Crick, Charlie Bowen, Joe Jordan (Carl Foreman), Dan Moyes, Ben Colmer, Dan Drane, Jamie Blackwell (Joe Furness), Declan Rogers (Aaron Mackay).
