HUNTINGDON TOWN ARE THE MOST SUCCESSFUL LOCAL FA CUP FOOTBALL TEAM THIS SEASON
F.A. Cup
Preliminary Round
Bugbrooke St Michaels 1 Huntingdon Town 2
Saturday, 03 September 2011
Huntingdon Town put Division One rivals Bugbrooke out of the FA Cup at Birds Close in a match that was only made close due to the Badgers goal in the last 15 minutes.
Huntingdon are riding the FA Cup wave and their stars are performing in the worlds greatest competition. Town have outlasted local rivals Godmanchester Rovers who lost to Loughbrough, St Ives who lost to AFC Sudbury and St Neots Town who were beaten by lowly Thurnby Nirvana who play at the same level as Town.
The bragging rights are certainly with Town at the moment and it was Bugbrooke who were latest to be put to the sword.
Declan Rogers has been a star since dropping back down to the UCL and it was his cross in the 17th minute that led to Dan Drane scoring.
A controlled performance took Town into the half and when Jamie Blackwell added a second six minutes into the second half, Town were sailing. The goal again coming from a Rogers assist.
With a quarter of an hour to play Rhyse Coleman pulled a goal back, which would have disappointed a Town defence working hard for a clean sheet, but Town held on to their lead to the final whistle despite heavy home pressure.
They will now face Daventry Town FC, former UCL Prem side who now play in The Evo-Stik League Southern - Division One Central on Saturday 17th September 2011.
Daventry outmuscled St Neots to the title two seasons ago and easily dispatched another former UCL team Woodford United in the FA Cup replay winning five nil.
Town can be proud of their performances in the FA Cup so far and no matter what the result against much fancied Daventry, Rick Marheineke’s men have shown their local rivals that the tide is turning.
Huntingdon: Dave Beeny, Shaun Colson, Ryan Spencer, Josh Crick, Charlie Bowen, Joe Jordan, Dan Moyes (Carl Foreman), Ben Colmer (Joe Furness), Dan Drane (Gerard Evans), Jamie Blackwell, Declan Rogers.
