Eynesbury Rovers completed the league double over third placed Rushden & Higham United in a seven goal thriller at Eynesbury.
Dan Beall was called into action in the sixth minute for Eynesbury as he dived to his right to push a way a Ben Lord shot. However, just two minutes later Rushden took the lead. A 30 yard free kick by Tyler Merries took a deflection and fell for Barry Deacon to score from close range as Eynesbury appealed in vain for the offside flag.
The visitor’s lead lasted only two minutes as Ben Cole was brought down inside the penalty area by visiting goalkeeper Craig Patterson, who picked up a yellow card. Lee Bassett converting the spot kick The Lankies regained the lead in the 21st minute when Beall parried a Craig Harrower shot but Lewis O’Dell reacted quickest to net the loose ball. From an O’Dell free kick Tyler Merries headed over whilst at the other end Tom Coles’ glancing header was held by Patterson.
Rovers’ equaliser came in the 35th minute when Ben Cole’s shot was pushed out by the goalkeeper but only as far as James Ducket who scored from close range. Just two minutes later Eynesbury were unlucky as Ross West’s shot from the edge of the penalty area struck the post. From a Fisk corner Dan Woodhead headed wide before Ben Cole saw his shot parried by Patterson and Barry Albone’s follow up shot was blocked by a defender.Ben Lord was injured at this point and R&H played the rest of the half with ten men but Lord was unable to continue after the break On the stroke of half time Cole had a shot pushed behind by Patterson.
The loss of Lord seemed to knock R&H out of their stride and Eynesbury took the lead in the 65th minute when a Fisk cross found Bassett unmarked at the far post and he had time to plant the ball beyond Patterson into the net. Ten minutes from time Craig Harrower hit the post with a shot for the Lankies whilst Lewis Odell’s follow up was off target. Twice Chris Walton made contact with headers from set pieces but neither troubled Beal in the home goal. In the 83rd minute, Gavin Batt, playing against his former club, found the net after Fisk’s initial free kick was blocked by Patterson to make it 4-2 to the hosts. Then in the third minute of stoppage time Rushden were awarded a penalty after Rob Ducket had brought down Craig Harrower. Jory Mann scored from the spot but there was not enough time left for R&H to mount any pressure for an equaliser .
