There are a number of upgrades that could be made to UCL Chatter but which aren't available due to costs.
At the moment this site is on a free server but we could upgrade to remove the ad's and have a smoother running quicker website.
One of the options I am looking at to fund this is sponsorship.
I haven't worked out a package or decided on whether to go for one main sponsor or a number of smaller partners but I wanted to canvass the members of the site for opinions... over to you.

Do you have a ballpark figure?

Jimmy, will you just get ad-free for the forum or a brand new host and then run an open source forum? PM me if you want

(Appologies for digging up old thread) I'm not sure how much these forum upgrades cost, however here's another option...
Supanames offer a relatively basic hosting package for £13.99 per year + VAT, which includes a free UK domain name. The package has a few file type restrictions (well officially atleast) and low bandwidth. However it is possible to setup a forum using freely available software (eg. Ikonboard) on this hosting package. I run one site + forum on this package wihout problems. For about £25 you can find hosting packages which offer more without 'file restrictions' (I'm not sure how often they actually check).
In the long run this option is probably cheaper and is definately better value for money than paying for 'ads-free' but being stuck with a subdomain on a third-party site.

Is this the actual stneotfc.net site?
I always marvel at that way that site runs from an ikonboard.

Nope, though it is hosted with Supanames. The site that runs on the £13.99 package and has Ikonboard running is my own personal site www.darkground.co.uk which makes use of a portal addon. I find Ikonboard easy to use, having used it for over 5 years and installed many boards on different servers.

I like it. It would be handy to have a front page for news and stuff before the forum section.
The challenge would be to migrate the members and content of this site across.

Unfortunately I doubt proboards will allow you to export the database, and I don't know of any forum software that has a convertor for Proboards for that reason. I think now during the close season is probably the best time to decide whether you wish to go for change, as it would cause the least disruption.

I would be happy to contribute say £5 or £10 towards getting a domain name and space.

I would be happy to contribute say £5 or £10 towards getting a domain name and space. I think some of us would, why not ask for donations on site and at our proposed gettogether in the summer. I would be happy to donate a couple of quid, especially if it got rid of Jimmys Arsenal orientated Avatars

Good idea, but be careful. The forum must stay free, with no obligation to pay, otherwise it will scare off many...

I know what you mean KPM, but I did say ask (not twist arm behind the back ask), but people may feel obliged and i didnt mean to imply that.

You can always have a 'Paypal donate' button or similar, to ask for voluntary donations. Though this tends to work best with websites as a whole rather than forums hosted on third party.
