How bad are the UCL referees? Does everyone feel as despondent at the referees performance every Saturday, is it time these people beamed from another planet every Saturday lunchtime are named and shamed.

It is totally impossible to be 100% perfect as a referee, I accept that. But I do agree that sometimes the officials in the UCL do tend to let the more senior players (on any team) ref the game for them.
I wont name names, but you all know the players I mean.

Sadly the players and officials of both Potton and Desborough witnessed a referee on Saturday whose sole purpose was to be centre of attention for the afternoon.
Bookings galore and if this had been a dirty game (which with credit to both sides it wasn't) then we would have run the risk of an abandonment due to too few players left on the pitch.
I don't profess to being a referee expert (although have been a referee for a short time) but the games I have seen in the UCL over the last few years make this individual stand out.
Damn shame as it really affected the game.

Having witnessed the Blisworth V Huntingdon game on Saturday a mention must be made about the inept performance of the match referee Mr Jonathan Collins. This official arrived intent on being the centre of attention and boy did he achieve it. From the minute he arrived and litter picked the whole playing area and then proceeded to measure the size of the pitch everybody knew the UCL Ayatollah had arrived. He then presided over 109 minutes (19 mins added time) of football/farce that he had no control over at any stage. After only 5 mins he told a Blisworth player that he would be sent off he criticised his own team mates again. His final inept act was to let Huntingdon kick off after the final goal with 3 Blisworth players still midway in the opponents half and stating that it was "not his fault if they were too slow in getting back" onto their own half of the pitch. A totally unacceptable performance in a league that is quick to punish clubs for any inadequacy but still provide sides with sub-standard officials on a regular basis, but the truth is, no UCL club should have to tolerate Mr Collins ever again and if he does officiate your game - YOU HAVE BEEN WARNED!!

Good on yer, the officials that deserve praise require a mention more so than the incompetent one. Well done Mr Swann and well said Spider.

Mr Jonathan Collins should never be allowed to referee a UCL match again. You can forgive bad decisions, bad days we all have them, however when the protection of players is ignored and the ego of the official replaces it then its time to say good bye to such individuals.
However Mr Collins stands out as an exception its hard enough getting officials and we all need to give them as much support as possible. There is a reall shortage of refs... but we can do without this one!

I think that the league does have a responsibility to ensure that the officials are up to standard and I have to say that in my opinion all levels of the non-league game are seeing a deterioration of officiating.
But that starts in the Premier League... ask yourself a question, having seen the level of abuse officials in the top tier take could you be a ref?
I know I couldn't and it is this that is causing the shortage that worried UCL watcher aludes to in his post above.
I really don't know the answer to this one...

I would like to see refs experiment with zero tolerence. Obviously this would be down to those above, however, to issue such a directive.
There's really no excuse for some of the abuse that goes on during matches .. in the UCL or at any level.
Perhaps managers need to be more proactive in encouraging their players to act in a more civilised manner ? They could read Cloughie's autobiography and learn how he used to handle his players in this respect!
